Who is Nim?

My background is an architect based in Thailand. I graduated from Silpakorn Univercity, Thai Architecture in year 2000, ten years later, I had got the new experience in London for 2 years spending for MA Creative Practice for Narrative Environments, Central St. Martins College of art and design, UAL. Now, I am working as an experience designer, story teller, and sometimes design interpreter.

Food Safety Note

the painting technique is called "On-Glaze" or "over- Glaze" which is a method of decorating ceramic articles, where the decoration is applied after it has been glazed. When the ware is fired, or re-fired in the case of twice-fired ware, the colours fuse into the glaze and so the decoration becomes durable. Because the decorating fire can be at a lower temperature with on-glaze decoration, a more varied palette of colours is available than with under-glaze decoration.

The colour I choose is  Marabu Ceramica Color from Germany. High-gloss, water based paint for porcelain, ceramic, terra-cotta, metal, glass etc. Ready-to-use.

Marabu-Ceramica is very durable and, after oven-baking (30 minutes at 160-170 °C), weatherproof, water-proof and even dishwasher-safe. The porcelain and ceramic paint has good light fastness, printability and viscosity. It is ideal for all porcelain painting techniques (outline technique, stenciling, sponge technique, etc.). Also suitable for airbrushing.
It is excellently suitable for painting on porcelain, ceramic, terracotta, earthenware, pre-fired ceramic, metal, glass and Arcopal.

Working Guidelines
1. Preparation - before painting, clean the object thoroughly, (e.g. alcohol-based spirit) making sure the surface to be painted is clean and grease free.
New objects should be washed with hot water and detergent first.

2. Application - Now the desired colours can be applied with a soft hair paintbrush in glaze or opaque finish.
Allow an air-drying time of at least 4 hours, before baking.

3. To bake the paint, put the painted object into a cold oven set for 160°C (320 °F).

When this temperature is reached, bake for 30 minutes and allow the item to cool down in the closed oven.
Now it can even be washed in the dishwasher !

4. Clean brushes simply with water immediately after use.

My research

I would like to check up on this safety issue again by painting all Ceramica, Marabu colours, on a white glazed porcelain and  did everything step-by-step following manufacturer instruction.

1. Left 12 hours after painting, then baked 30-minutes 170 c in a kitchen oven.

2. Let them cold down 12 hours in the oven and cleaning gently by soft sponge. As a result, every colour still fresh and fine.

3. Hardly brushed in water (some of them faded a bit.)

4. Hardly brushed with dish-washing liquid

5. Hardly ever scratched by hard sponge

6. There were colours no. 65 ,94 ,and 50 had been faded off.

What's about ceramic stories by nim?

The thing is I do love pottery as much as I do love painting; therefore, I have combined them together and let them tell their own stories. I am the author of my works (also my stories), I would like to invite you to my narrative world. In the other hand, you might get them and start your own stories. Do not forget to share me back.

Can I use those painted plate for food?
I had asked them about food salfety and this is their aswer.

" ... Concerning  your questions: In general, you can use painted plates or cups for food and drinks. We recommend not to paint cutting surfaces and drinking edges as abrasion from cutlery can damage the painting and no direct food contact. Furthermore it is harmless to fire them in the same oven as you prepare meals. While firing, the painting shouldn´t get in touch with the oven (except of the baking tray of course) and if you air it afterwards, as regular, there is no reason to worry. If you have any further question, please don´t hesitate to contact us. Best regards, Jenifer"

- Using a soft sponge and soap water, gently clean painted surface

- Do not contact painting surfaces dejectedly with food and your lips.

Success! Message received.
